3 Layers 10 Days

The first layer to go live was for the Lions of Bath. The public art project, following in the successful footsteps of King Bladud’s Pigs (or should that be trotters), was screaming out for it’s own layer; a new and unique feature that made it stand out from the numerous copy-cat (see what I did there) public art projects. You’ve got elephants in London, cows in Bristol and who knows what elsewhere!

When you visit Bath to see the Lions, you’re going to want to know where they are. There is of course the paper map which you can buy from the lions shop in Milsom Place, (and other goodies – the miniature porcelain lions are fantastic), but if you’ve got a smartphone – use the technology, use Layar.

The next two layers went live at the same time.

The first (officially) was for the BBC Focus, science and technology magazine. That layer has over 10,000 POI’s, mostly retailers where you can buy a copy of the magazine, but also hands-on science and discovery centres, where you can pick up a copy in the gift shop.

BBC Focus are doing a piece on Augmented Reality in their June issue which includes the Layar Reality browser.

And the final layer is for the Bath Fringe Festival which launches today. The layer is a great example of location based services as it provides you with instant access to events and tickets, at venues in your immediate vicinity.

It has been a busy two weeks but well worth it.
